You won’t be able to see whether or not your friend is online or offline until they accept your request. While the invitation is pending, your friend will be listed under your friends list, but under a different category called “Invitations Sent”. You will have to wait until your friend accepts your request.Once you find your friend, click on their name and then click on the “Add as Friend” button on the right side of their profile.You can also choose to look for your friend by typing their name in the search box right at the end of the page. You can enter your friend’s code or send them a quick invite link from the dialog box right below it. You will be taken to a new window where you will be presented with three options.In the panel that opens up, select the “Add a Friend” option.Launch Steam from your desktop or from the menu on top, and click on the “Friends” option.
